Jingle and Joy Celebration 2025

Thank you to the many donors who helped make the Jingle and Joy Celebration memorable for our Zapata students! Thank you to the Chicago Blackhawks, Jasmine Aguinaga, Nielsen Company, Hector Robles, Laura Johnson (KeySmart Mortgage), Maria Benitez, La Chiquita Grocery Store, Zavala’s Grocery Store, the Zapata Family, and to those who purchased from the Amazon wishlist. A special thanks to State Representative Edgar Gonzalez who made an appearance as Santa!

Class of 2026 Community Service Project

The class of 2026 helped feed the Little Village community by volunteering at the NewLife Centers Community Resource Center. Through this service opportunity our students packed over 440 food boxes in just 70 minutes. The boxes will help feed over 1,800 members of our community during the Holiday season.

The 8th grade teaching team and students thank both the Chicago Blackhawks for providing our bus transportation and NewLife Centers for allowing our students to serve in this meaningful way. We are proud of our 8th grade students.

Prek | Workshop | The Power of Play 

A special thanks to Ms. A. Ramirez and the Prek team for coordinating one of our Prek workshops for this year, the Power of Play, on December 10th. Families were engaged in learning strategies for students to build social skills and language. This was one of five Prek family workshops that are scheduled this year to support parents/guardians and student skill building.

First Stride Trip to Fifth Third Arena - Grades 3-4

On December 8th Zapata 3rd and 4th grade students went to Fifth Third Arena to take their First Stride on the Chicago Blackhawks ice! Thank you to the Chicago Blackhawks for their partnership and for providing this opportunity for our students!

Student-Led Walkout

The Zapata Student Voice Committee organized a walkout for students in grades 3-8 with the support from administration and teachers. This was a powerful example of democracy in action that allowed students to express themselves about immigration issues in Little Village, to raise awareness and support for the immigrant community in Little Village and Chicago, and was an opportunity for students to raise their voices and communicate that they & their ideas matter and to promote the common good. A special thanks to student members of the SVC and to Mr. Sanchez for his leadership of the Zapata Student Voice Committee.

Zapata Garden Summer Update

The Zapata Garden continues to grow over the summer! Christopher Rogel and Ariel Flores, former alum, helped with the harvest of garlic and beets on July 9th. A special thanks to Rolando Perez from LVEJO and Mrs. Marta Lopez! This year we added a peach tree to the garden thanks to the suggestion of Mrs. Rojas, Mrs. Lupita Ramirez, and Mrs. Jimenez. The cucumber, calabazas, grandma tomatoes, Serrano chili peppers, tomatillos, and Mrs. Lopez's ornamental section of herbs like sage, manzanilla, cilantro, and lots of flowers are growing nicely in mid July.

Thank you to the SVC and Mr. Sanchez for their help surveying Zapata students about Warriors of the Month, reviewing the data collected, and then presenting to the CCT (Culture and Climate Team) and the Network 7 SEL Specialist. Based on the SVC presentation to the CCT and feedback from students, updates will take place next school year for the Warriors of the Month program.

826CHI ASWL Showcase

A special shout out to Ms. Eliza Ramirez for her leadership and coordination with our partnership with 826CHI. Our students were celebrated for their commitment toward improving their writing, their creative stories around a video game they designed, and for their published book thanks to 826CHI! We look forward to our continued collaboration/partnership with 826CHI in the future.

This experience was truly invaluable and profoundly enriched our students' understanding of their local environment and sustainable practices.

Zapata Career Day 2025 

Thank you to Mrs. Marta Perez-Lopez, Mrs. Chavez and everyone else on the Career Day team (Mrs. Burgos, Ms. Mota, Mrs. Guadalupe Ramirez and Ms. Maritza Ramirez) that supported in making this day a success. We appreciate all the planning and intentionality in ensuring that our students were able to learn about different careers. A special thank you to all staff members who made referrals and brought volunteers into our school that have impacted our students.  

Zapata Garden - Thank You Zapata Parents & LVEJO 

Parents of the Zapata community have been working closely with Mr. Rolando Perez and his team from Little Village Environmental Justice Organization (LVEJO) to prepare our community garden. LVEJO donated soil for our editable garden. Parents learned about soil, prepared seedlings, and how to safely transplant our seedlings into the soil. Former alum, Alan Flores and Yasmin Ruiz, who volunteer at LVEJO came and helped. Zapata parents are looking forward to maintaining our garden over the summer months to be able to water, care for, and harvest these plants.

Grades 4-6 Photography Exhibition

Students in grades 4, 5, and 6 completed a six week photography workshop. Students learned many photography terms and took pictures looking for different kinds of photo images. Then all students at Zapata Academy were invited to an Art Exhibition on Friday, May 16th to view the images taken by our student photographers. We are proud of our students and their artistic efforts.

Two of our Zapata graduates - Alister Ramírez and Arturo Anguiano III - were recently featured in a Chicago Sun-Times article about their artwork.

Alister Ramírez and Arturo Anguiano III, both 17-year-old juniors, were among the dozens of students who displayed and sold their artwork on Saturday, May 10 at the Multicultural Arts School’s MASterpiece Art Festival. The festival was followed by a 20th anniversary celebration of Little Village Lawndale High School.

BAC/PAC Meeting - Cinco de Mayo/Mother's Day Celebration

During the workshop session, parents participated in a hands-on activity to create their own Sonaja, a traditional percussion instrument crafted from wood sourced in the Tuxpan region of Jalisco. They also learned about the Danza that incorporates the Sonaja del Sur de Jalisco, further enriching their understanding of regional cultural traditions.

7th and 8th Grade Volleyball Teams

A shout out to our 7th and 8th Grade Volleyball Teams that played exhibition games after school. Thank you to Mr. Holt for his leadership in supporting our students.

4th and 5th Grade Chicago Fire Soccer Team

A shout and thank you to Mr. Salgado, Ms. Lennox, & Mrs. Burgos for their leadership with our Chicago Fire partnership. We currently have 4th and 5th grade students participating in our soccer group playing on weekdays and Saturdays.

Students in grades 4-5 participating in the Chicago Fire Soccer program were able to attend a Chicago Fire game on Saturday, May 10, 2025. Thank you to Mr. Salgado, Mrs. Lennox, and Mrs. Burgos for coordinating this event and to our chaperones, Mr. Holt, Mrs. Bustamante, and Mr. Nunez, for their support.

Zapata Class of 2025 - 8th Grade Trip to Washington, D.C.

Our 8th graders were able to travel to Washington, D.C. from April 22-24, 2025. Some of our 8th graders even changed the wreath of the tomb of the unknown soldier during the Changing of the Guard Ceremony. We are so proud of our 8th graders and grateful to the 8th grade team for their leadership, dedication, and planning in making this trip to Washington, D.C. possible.

Zapata Mile Chases Complete CARA 5k Run 

Congratulations to our Zapata Warriors who completed the CARA 5k Run on March 15, 2025. A shout out and special thanks to Ms. Undda and Mr. Salgado for coaching our students this year. We are proud of all of our Zapata Warriors running accomplishments and progress.

Zapata Alumni Collaboration with Chicago Bulls, United Airlines, and Chicago Artist, Nez 

Three of our Zapata graduates - Ana Salgado, Brianna Reyes, and Alejandra Perez - were recently featured in a special collaboration between the Chicago Bulls, United Airlines, and Chicago artist Nez.

As part of Infinity High School's Early College Program, these talented young women helped design the Mercado bags that were distributed at a Bulls game on Monday, March 10th celebrating Latinx culture and community. Ana and Brianna were specifically selected to create special commemorative gifts for the artist, while Alejandra represented the program by speaking at the official banquet.

Zapata Seventh Grade 

The Zapata Seventh Grade was featured in the weekly CPS "A Look Around the District" Newsletter on February 28th.

​At Zapata Elementary in Little Village, 7th-grade students analyzed the 2025 Super Bowl halftime show as a part of Black History Month and will also analyze protest songs throughout the decades to learn more about the impact music has had on social movements.

Congratulations to Mr. Velasco - 2024 CPS Principal Game Changer

Mr. Velasco was notified by our Network 7 Chief, Jose Acevedo, as one of four recipients of the 2024 CPS Principal Game Changer! The honor reflects Mr. Velasco’s exceptional leadership and significant contributions to the district. 

According to Chief Acevedo, being a Game Changer means Mr. Velasco possesses a unique blend of vision, innovation, and dedication. According to Chief Acevedo, Mr. Velasco continually seeks out new strategies, pushes beyond conventional methods, and works tirelessly to transform our school community.  

Mr. Velasco’s recognition was officially announced at this year’s Principals’ Summer Leadership Institute on July 16th.  A banner featuring his photo and “Secret Sauce” was presented at the event. Thank you, Mr. Velasco for your leadership.

Zapata Blackhawks Jersey

The Chicago Blackhawks came to Zapata to give our school a Zapata jersey with the number 96, the year our school opened. Zapata Academy is grateful for the partnership with the Chicago Blackhawks during the 2023-2024 school year.

Grades 3-5 Garden Workshop - Enlace Partnership

Rolando Perez, Healthy Food Systems Coordinator at Enlace, facilitated a six week gardening workshop for students in grades, 3, 4, and 5. At the beginning, students made a plan for our courtyard and learned about helping the community by donating food grown within Little Village. During the six weeks, students planted vegetables and zinnias from seeds, recorded plant progress, painted flower pots to take home, cleaned the courtyard, and celebrated with a parfait.

Mr. Perez will be coming during the summer months to watch over our plants and work with some students during summer school. We hope Mr. Perez returns to Zapata next school year to help students learn about gardening.

Juaquin Hamilton-Youngbird Speaks to Sixth Grade Classes

Juaquin Hamilton-Youngbird enrolled Sac and Fox member spoke to sixth grade students on Friday, April 12. This visit was made in partnership with the Chicago Blackhawks and the educational curriculum developed in partnership with Juaquin Hamilton-Youngbird.

First Stride Trip to Fifth Third Arena - Grades 3-4

Zapata 3rd and 4th graders went to Fifth Third Arena to take their First Stride on the Chicago Blackhawks ice! Students staked as reggaeton, salsa, and Spanish pop played throughout the arena. Students and parents were also able to visit the United Hockey Museum. This was a fun events for students!

Solar Eclipse - April 8, 2024

Zapata Academy 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students had an opportunity to look at the solar eclipse. What a cool sight and experience! A few parents joined us in viewing at the gate.

Zapata Mile Chasers - Chicago Mates 5K Run

Mrs. Undda and Mr. Salgado's Zapata Mile Chasers running group participated in Chicago Runs, Running Mates 5K Run on Saturday, February 24, 2024. Way to go runners!
The Running Mates program utilizes running and physical activity to improve social and emotional well-being of young people in middle school and high school. This program provides an inclusive and non-competitive environment in which young people work towards completing a local 5k race, while developing a positive self-image, promoting goal setting, and building relationships with peers. Running Mates coaches are the teachers or school staff who lead after-school practices 3 times a week and serve as positive mentors and role models.

Zapata 5th and 6th grade students went to Fifth Third Arena to take their First Stride on the Chicago Blackhawks ice! Students and parents learned how to ice skate and how to fall safely. Santa came, the team's mascot came out, and we toured the Chicago Blackhawks locker room. The event came to an end with a treat of hot chocolate and cookies! What an amazing night!

Author Visit - Margarita Quiñones Peña

Margarita Quiñones Peña, Zapata Alum Class of 2004, presented her new book Homecoming: El Viaje a Mi Hogar to our students and staff on Wednesday, December 6, 2023. 

Imagination Theater

Zapata Academy is grateful for the continued partnership with Imagination Theater. Kindergarten through Grade 5 students attended the Ease the Tease presentation and students in Grades 6-8 attended the Take a Stand presentation.

Chicago Blackhawks Visit to Zapata Academy

The Chicago Blackhawks came to Zapata on Thursday, October 19, 2023 to work with fifth grade students on hockey skills and drills. The Chicago Blackhawks donated all the hockey equipment used to our school.

Insect Kingdom Project in Art Classes

Zapata students worked diligently during art classes with Ms. Martinez to create larger than life insect sculptures. 6th-8th grade students worked in groups to strategize and tackle the challenge. Each team was responsible for creating their sculptures using only cardboard, newspaper, and tape. Once the foundation was set, each team was tasked to mix their own paper mache clay using a specific recipe. 

A special group of 4th graders were selected to paint the remaining sculptures. The 4th graders had a blast and worked great together. All in all, we know our Zapata Warriors made memories to last a lifetime.

​Zapata Academy would like to celebrate the retirement of Mr. Alfonso Gomez after 31 years of teaching!

The beginning of the Zapata Academy Courtyard Garden Club 

Students cleaned, prepared the soil, and planted watermelons, butternut squash, and jalapeño peppers. Three peach trees were also planted. Thank you seventh and fifth grade students for helping out! Thank you to Ms. Jimenez,  Ms. Guadalupe Ramirez, and Ms. Marta Lopez. Ms. Valasek and Ms. Rock will work with fourth and fifth grade students over the summer planting seeds, making observations, and possibly harvesting something in the fall.

​Special Delivery! Giving Tuesday Thank You!


​Sharing some good news from Giving Tuesday. In November and December 2022, Ms. Hlousek's Amazon wishlist for our school library was cleared! Thanks to the generosity of online donors, 400+ books and items totaling close to $7,000 were purchased for our students and our school library. Thank you to all the donors who supported this project and our students' love of reading! These books will benefit all of our Zapata Warriors and we are truly grateful for your support!

Meeting with Zapata Middle School Panel

A special shout out and thanks to our Middle School team and Mrs. Burgos helped in the selection and preparation of  a group of 9 students to speak with the Executive Director of Nutrition Support Services and his team on Thursday, November 17, 2022. The meeting was scheduled after the feedback our students provided on the student perspective survey regarding school lunch. The purpose of the meeting was for our students to advocate for better school lunches. As a result of the meeting, the Office of Nutrition Support Services will work with our lunch staff to improve  Zapata school lunches and launch some new meal options in the coming months.

During Latinx/Hispanic Heritage Month Zapata students participated in a Latinx country research project to learn more about the diversity within the Latinx culture. Classrooms shared their knowledge of the country selected through a creative hallway bulletin board.

​On Thursday, October 6th Zapata Academy welcomed  17 high school recruiters from a variety of CPS high school programs and private schools. Our in-person high fair was a success. Thank you to all the HS recruiters who came.

Zapata Academy was represented at the “El Grito 5K Run/Walk” on Sunday, September 11th. Twenty-five students and staff ran to kick off Hispanic Heritage Month.  It was a memorable day!

Zapata Warriors Raffle Winners

Zapata kicked off the school year with a fun week of raffles. 205 Zapata students received "Welcome Back" t-shirts on the first day of school. In celebration of perfect attendance during the first week of school, students were entered in a raffle to win large prizes (2 bikes, 4 scooters, 14 basketballs). 20 lucky students won these raffles.

Former Chicago Bear Patrick Mannelly Visited Zapata
​with Bernie's Book Bank

Zapata students and staff showed our Bears spirit on Friday, December 13, 2019 when former Chicago Bears long snapper Patrick Mannelly visited Zapata Academy with a special delivery of books from Bernie's Book Bank. The special guests visited third grade classrooms and two of the nominees for the inaugural Patrick Mannelly Award read to our third graders. Students in preschool through sixth grade received a green Bernie's Book Bank bag full of six new books to read and add to their home library collection.
